Where in the world is South Vietnam?

South Vietnam was a state which ruled the southern half of Vietnam from 1949 until 1975. It was known officially as the State of Vietnam from 1949 to 1955, then as the Republic of Vietnam from 1955 to 1975. Around the same time, the northern portion of the country was commonly known as North Vietnam.
