SOUTH KOREA

South Korea is a country in East Asia which is officially known as the Republic of Korea. It is situated on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, and is officially in a cease-fire with North Korea. The two countries are separated by the regulated and patrolled Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and both refer to themselves as being the official nation of Korea. Before the division, the area occupied by North Korea and South Korea was home to the nation of Korea. South Korea is bordered by North Korea and the Korean Strait, with Japan as a close neighbor across the Sea of Japan (also known as the East Sea of Korea), and China as a close neighbor across the East China Sea.
