Where in the world is Samoa?

Samoa is a country which has under within it the western portion of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The two main islands are Upolu and Savai'i. The region was called Western Samoa and briefly retained the name as a country after gaining independence from New Zealand in 1962. In 1997 the name was officially changed to Samoa, despite protests from the residents of American Samoa who felt that the change would work to erode their cultural identity.
