Mauritania is in north west Africa. The Atlantic Ocean forms its western boundary. Its neighbors include Mali to the east and Senegal to the south. Like several other neighbors Mauritania gained independence from France in 1960 as part of the dissolution of the confederation of colonies known as French West Africa. Its banknote issues are currently part of the West African States authority.
