Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, and is officially known as the Republic of Latvia. It was founded in 1918, and then was occupied first by the Soviet Union and then by Germany before re-achieving autonomy in 1991. It is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, and is across the Baltic Sea from Sweden.
