Italy is a unitary parliamentary republic in south-central Europe. It is officially known as the Republic of Italy, and it borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The nation encompasses the Italian Peninsula, the islands of Sicily and Sardenia, as well as many other smaller islands in the Mediterranean Sea.
