The Democratic Republic of the Congo (not to be confused with the Republic of the Congo) is the second largest country in Africa. It has gone through five previous names which are still sometimes used unofficially. It was known as the Belgian Congo from 1908 until 1960, and as Zaire from 1971 to 1997.
