Barbados is an island in the Lesser Antilles where the Caribbean Sea merges into the Atlantic Ocean. Neighboring islands include Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent. A former British Colony, Barbados became an independent nation in 1966. Its population of nearly 300,000 relies heavily on the tourist industry.
