Angola is in southwestern Africa, bounded by Namibia on the south, Zambia on the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. The country has a population of approximately 18 million and an area nearly twice the size of Texas or five times the area of the United Kingdom. Angola gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. Many Angolan banknotes issued thereafter feature a likeness of Antonio Agostinho Neto, the first President of the Peoples Republic.
