Grover Criswell

What are "Criswell Numbers"? I am asked this question frequently. The check shown above hints at the style of Grover C. Criswell (1934-1999), a flamboyant and energetic dealer who specialized in Confederate and Southern States currency. Grover authored several books including "Confederate and Southern States Currency" and "North American Currency". In the former publication Grover developed a numbering system for identifying the many varieties of notes. The Criswell numbering system was based on the work of William Bradbeer and is still widely used today. Grover's works inspired a generation of collectors. Take a close look at the check above. Notice that it was redeemable in Confederate currency!!

BATON ROUGE. November 1, 1873. LA910-05. $1. Baton Rouge, Grosse-Tete & Opelousas Rail Road Company. Indian scout. Red tint, green back. PCGS Banknote 45. Serial 944. $750

The "DIX" Note

This note bears the word "DIX" (French for "Ten") on its back. Is this the origin of the word "Dixie"? Perhaps. Earlier notes from this bank,

Michigan obsoletes offer collectors many temptations. Notes from the State

Bank (see the $2 above) are among the most popular obsoletes from any state.

Many banks opened in 1838 and vanished in a year or less, leaving behind only a

paper trail for collectors. Michigan obsoletes are abundant, affordable and intriguing.

Try 'em, you'll like 'em!

There was an uncut sheet of these in the American Banknote Company archives sale (Lot 844). It became a part of the Schingoethe collection. I purchased it from a Smythe sale and cut it. The note which follows is not from the ABNCo/Schingoethe sheet. It is a darker shade of blue. The stamp hinges on the card suggest it was part of D C Wismer's collection.

The stories of the Comstock Lode and Virginia City are legendary. Less well known is the rise and fall of Austin, Nevada and The Manhattan Silver Mining Company. This mining company was financed by New York City interests (thus the name "Manhattan") and grew rapidly in size and influence following the Civil War. The notes offered below were intended to provide the convenience of paper money (light, portable) while carrying the backing of "hard" money - they were payable to the bearer in "Merchantable Silver" - silver coin or assayed silver ingots. They were to be issued by the Company Paymaster but this never happened - all known survivors are unissued remainders. Each note carries an imprinted US Internal Revenue Stamp (We were still paying for the Civil War). These colorful notes were produced in denominations of $1, $3, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Nevada has little else to offer collectors of obsoletes.
