Historical Note: The Magdalena notes carry the printed signature of Drake DeKay (1836 - 1886). During our Civil War, DeKay was aid de camp to General Joseph K F Mansfield. The Lower California Company was formed in 1869 by a group of New York entrepreneurs who took over the "Lesse Concession", formed in 1864. The Lower California Company failed to fulfill the contract which required organizers to colonize the area with at least two hundred families.
